#WPPI Shifted This Year, and It was Beautiful!

Me Ra Koh

It’s Wednesday night, and I am headed home.  I’m thinking about all that happened “just” today, and I am overwhelmed. It has been an amazing year at WPPI, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International.

I want to thank ALL of you who said a prayer for my platform talk, Creating Confidence.  Hundreds of women (and a few good men :)) came, and within two hours I felt a deep, beautiful confidence infuse the room.  So many of you shared your stories with me afterward, and I treasure every one.  Their was a shift that happened in that room for so many.  I felt my own spirit step into a new level of confidence.  What an amazing morning.  A couple thank you’s that are a must…first, thank you to SONY for sponsoring me to give my talk.  It is a honor to represent you and have your support.  Big thanks to WPPI for having me join the conference in the last hour.  Something shifted this year in how many women attended, and how supported they felt.  It was BEAUTIFUL.  Thank you WPPI!  And a HUGE thank you to all those who attended my talk!  To get up and be at my 8am talk–8am in VEGAS!–and not only attend–but you brought your whole heart, it was a honor to be with all of you this morning.  We took a gazillion photos together, will you tag me on FB b/c I would love to remember all your names.

But the day’s magic didn’t stop with my morning talk.  Seventy women got in the limo shuttle and packed into taxis to the Little Chapel of Flowers for a special SOAR! Luncheon to honor women in photography.  Wow!  This luncheon was AMAZING!!  I wanted to cry with tears of joy as I watched SOAR! Applicants meet each other face to face for the first time in two years.  And then there were so many women who came that are simply new to the industry, new to SOAR!, and after this luncheon they felt plugged in and surrounded with support.  A BIG thank you to a few of the SOAR! Partners who helped pull off the luncheon.  Roxanne at Pixel2Canvas was our hero on making this luncheon happen.  Smugmug and FastLine Media also came and blessed the women with surprise, generous gifts.  A couple from Thirst Relief dressed up as a Bride/Groom so we could do a live shoot–we LOVE Thirst Relief for 1001 reasons!  Mike Larson and his lovely wife Rachel and sweet baby Hannah came so we could practice taking photos of a family/baby.  Mike, amazing photographer and busy as all get out, gave us two hours to practice taking photos of him and his family!  Dane Sanders came and shared some of his favorite tips to working with a bride and groom, and then he shared a few things from his heart that were so sincere and moving.  Thank you Dane.  And Lauren Wendle, the VP of Nielsen Photo Group (who owns WPPI, Photo Plus, PDN, really–all of it ;))…she graced us with her presence, words of support and that alone felt like such incredible gift to women in the industry.  The venue, Little Chapel of Flowers, went over the top in hosting a beautiful lunch for all of us.  If you or a friend is ever getting married in Vegas, this sweet chapel is the place to go!

But one of the most beautiful parts was having some of the SOAR! women get up and share their stories.  Christine Barker and Lynda Kennedy, former SOAR! applicants, both shared their stories and it was powerful.

SOAR! Sisters! Melanie Soleil and Christine Barker

Their was a shift this year at WPPI, and it was beautiful.  If you didn’t get to come, you’ve got to mark your calendar for next year.  We will have to do another SOAR! Garden Party!!!  Throughout the week I asked several women, “Do you feel supported this year at WPPI, or do you feel like the show is catering more to men?”

Orange County CONFIDENCE Women from 3 years Ago!

Every single woman told me that she had had the BEST week at WPPI, felt wonderful support and was excited at how much she had learned.  This year, 65% of those attending WPPI were women.  It was amazing!  I have to thank all those at WPPI who have made subtle changes that are empowering women in POWERFUL ways. Without WPPI, none of these powerful experiences would have happened this week.  (thank you George for EVERY thing you and your team did)

Nine speaking sessions in three days.  Phew.  I can’t wait to get home tonight and hug my beautiful babies.  Pascaline told me on the phone today that she bought me a gift at Starbucks because of how proud she is of her mama speaking to women.  How did I get so lucky to have the most beautiful support from my nine year old?  My heart is full.

To all of you who are in Seattle/Tacoma area, I invite you my last February speaking engagement this Sunday at Destiny Church.  Click here for directions.  It starts at 10am.  And I’m going to share my heart on how the impossible still happens today. If your spirit is heavy, your heart is discouraged, and you feel alone, I hope to meet you on Sunday at this speaking engagement.  This is for women and men–so all of you guys who email me about coming to hear me talk–this is your event.  🙂  Look forward to seeing you.

xoxo,

m

p.s.  Due to being up front, I didn’t get a lot of photos from this week and the Garden Party.  If you took photos, will you post them to FB and tag me?  I would LOVE to share the photos on the blog!!  Thanks so much!

Me Rah, it was so great to meet you. I was praying for purpose for this week and I ended up going to your talk on a whim, having no idea who you were or what you were about. The words you spoke and the sweet spirit you have were a true blessing. I wrote down as much as I can remember so when those hard days come and I doubt myself, I can read the words you spoke over us and feel renewed with confidence. Thank you for your raw honesty, it’s refreshing and greatly needed. Thank you!

WPPI was an amazing experience! I was so blessed to have been a part of it. My friends and I over lunch were commenting on the amount of women that were there, it was awesome!!
I only wished I could have been there to listen to you talk, you are so inspiring 🙂 Next year I’ll have to make sure I stay long enough to hear you speak (and at least we got a quick hi in passing on the escalators).
I met so many amazing photographers/speakers and I love Dane Sanders, hearing him speak was moving.
Meeting up with the girls from 2010 OC workshop and making so many new friends too was such an incredible experience 🙂

I thank you for all you do for all women including myself… Keep doing your thing 🙂 So glad we got to sit down with you last night and chat. The Garden Party was amazing! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  6. What a great post! I have to agree, WPPI was awesome. My husband kept commenting on how many women there were there…lol. Thanks so much for your amazing heart 🙂 I so wish we could have stayed to be a part of everything yesterday, but next year for sure!! I’m so glad I got to see you and say hi at least!

  8. Thrilled to hear of this beautiful shift that has and is occuring. I hope to attend WPPI when the time is right. Welcome home…job well done beautiful momma!!!

  9. I helped a friend hear you speak and was blessed with finding out about the Garden Party! It was wonderful and inspiring to meet you, so many amazing women, receive gifts of opportunity from your sponsors and be a part of this day with a close friend.

My camera battery was about to die and I used it’s last bit of power to take photos of the beautiful new Larson family with their little miracle that is Hannah. I also blogged about the event and wish I had more photos to share of the amazing group of women that were there! Thank you for sharing your blessings and gifts with us all!

  10. MeRa, you did a great job at all of your talks at the Sony booth! My husband said he was so nervous to be your model. Thanks for speaking with us and always giving me encouragement to push forward.

    Me Ra,
Your class was AMAZING!!! I wanted to go with you to the luncheon, but had an obligation to volunteer at the NILMDTS booth. I hope that you’re there next year so that I can give you a hug! Your class was inspiring and encouraging! Thank you for sharing your heart and expertise! I really appreciate you!!!

Me Ra, I wanted to thank you so much for giving such an awesome presentation. I went to several platform classes and most –though excellent– have muddle together for me in my mind. HOWEVER, yours stands out to me. Your honesty, genuiness, and veritable love for women and for the power behind photography shines brightly.

Blessings to you and your family!
    Greyson

  13. Hi MeRa!

I am SO happy you came to WPPI this year and for the incredible Garden Party. Hearing you speak, being around your energy is amazing but it was your generous hug that reminded me to breathe. Thank you for your commitment to women and for letting a fellow crybaby (my words) let it rip!

Here’s to great big hugs, sisterhood and waterproof mascara!

    xoxo,
    Beth

  14. Briana says:

Me Ra, I just want to say thank you with my whole heart for your inspiration. This year was my first WPPI. And I don’t so a lot of research on other photographers. But when I got the amazing opportunity to go this year I started researching people. I did ALOT of praying before I booked my preboard classes. I asked the Good Lord to put me exactly where I needed to be. I asked Him to let me meet women that loved Him. And that is exactly what he did! Out of all of the classes I took I felt the most strongly to go to yours. And it was the most fulfilling of all of the classes there. Thank you again so very much!

  15. Melissa says:

    Me Ra,
It was a pleasure to finally hear you speak in person! I really enjoyed hearing you speak, I’m sad to say I didn’t get a chance to chat with you in person one on one, but perhaps next time I can. When you had us write down our biggest weakness, that was hard for me to do, but I did it and found a common thread between those weakness. I realize that it is something I need to deal with and not ignore, I’ve been feeling like a bottle that is filled with emotions and it’s about to burst open if I don’t deal with it. Thank you for that and for having the courage to speak in front of us all and inspring us to have confidence in us all. Your amazing. Oh and it was also wonderful to see all the other Soar sisters at the luncheon, it was great to put names with faces. Thank you and everyone again. Happy to hear you made it home safe with the crazy snow storm.
    Hugs,
    Melissa

  16. Mera! Thank you -again- for being true to yourself. I know I told you already, but your platform teaching was powerful! Wow! I know it touched many hearts.

And, thanks for the opportunity to share my Soar! story again.

Brian — you are an awesome man … thanks for always sharing your wife with us! :o)

    With thanks & hugs,
    Lynda

Me Ra – you are AMAZING!

Thank you so much for being so genuine and true. Your talk in the morning was very inspiring and of all the classes I went to during WPPI, you’re the only one who touched my heart and encourage me to go after my dream. The Garden Party was such a wonderful way to end my WPPI trip. I’m so glad I changed my flight so I could attend both your talk and party.

  18. Me Ra Koh says:

Virginia, I LOVE your blog post!! I tried to leave a comment but couldn’t get it to post. Here’s what it was. I hope you see this. Thanks for sharing all that you did on your blog!

    Dear Virginia,
Thank you so much for all that you shared in this blog post. I’m so excited to hear how much you enjoyed the SOAR! Garden Party. As women, we totally need each other, especially when we are fighting for our dreams. You go girl! Don’t let those voices talk you out of it. And when the voices get to nasty and loud, email me, come to the http://www.soarority.com forum and let us remind you of how you and ALL of us are worthy of our dreams.
    Much, much love to you,
    Me Ra

Beautifully and gently intense and vibrant, that’s what I would have to describe your 8am platform talk (you know I halfta get up early to fix up this red curl). You just blew me away and everyone else in the crowd!

  20. MeRa it was so wonderful to finally connect in person! Thank you so much for an inspiring lunch my friend. You are such a blessing to women everywhere- keep shining!

(I’m still kicking myself in the butt for missing the garden party- you don’t even want to know how that happened)…. damn vegas. 😉
