Magical Light…the kind of light that takes your breath away. How do pro photographers capture this light over and over again?

Hold on as we say goodbye to Auto mode and Aperture Priority mode!

“Even Aperture Priority mode?” some of you ask. YEP!  We are going all Manual to capture magical light. And I PROMISE, shooting in manual is WAY easier than you would ever guess. Brian and I are going to teach you step-by-step how we shoot in manual to get consist, magical lighting.

Every time I say this to a CONFIDENCE Workshop, they look back at me with doubt in their eyes. But by 1pm on Day 2 of the workshop, they are shooting in manual like pros (and giving me big hugs!)!  How we learn makes a difference in how well we understand something.

For those of you who don’t know, before I was a photographer I got a Masters Degree in teaching. I take teaching, or better yet–empowering and equipping YOU, very seriously. I’m confident that you will walk away with a deeper understanding of capturing magical light that you never expected! I’ve been testing that confidence for almost a decade with a thousand women who have come through our workshops.  And I haven’t lost one yet!

More Nitty Gritty…

This 4 week, intensive, online course is going to unpack diverse lighting scenarios so you can not only find the magical light but capture it consistently! Be prepared to dive into Metering Modes and get really cozy with your Exposure Compensation Scale! (What an insanely big term for a small thing! We will demystify a lot of those terms!)

Walk through the step-by-step process I make every time I start a photo shoot, whether it’s of my kids reading under a blanket or for a portrait shoot in NYC. I also want to say, be prepared to make mistakes (because you have to give yourself freedom to get worse before you can get better). But when you’re shooting gets better, and your “happy accidents” turn into consist shots, you may just come to Dallas, TX and give me a hug! YEAH!! Can’t WAIT to do this with YOU!

“But I’m TERRIFIED of having my photos critiqued!”

If you’re saying that to yourself, I get it.  Critiques can either tear you apart or empower you to fly.  I’m so passionate about the empowering type of critiques that I’ve been studying the art of critiques AND doing it for over twenty years with both writers and photographers.  I promise that we will push you, challenge you, but you will leave feeling stronger and more confident.  We will never put you down, criticize or discourage you.  And we want give empty praise either.

We will look for consistencies in your shooting, traits you unknowingly do that you can build on while also challenging you to stretch a little farther, try the exercise one more time.  This is all about giving you the tools to create magical light in your photos, and we’ve done this for over a thousand women!  Get ready ladies!  We’re going to have a BLAST!

I highly recommend this workshop! Me Ra and Brian are amazing! I value so much their input and I feel they put a lot of effort to give us feedback on our progress. I learned so much doing this online workshop and gain confidence with my camera and also controlling the environment when I photograph my little ones. It also worked very well for me because I could watch and review their lessons at a time that was convenient for me. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Do your self and your kids a favor and take the workshop!

One of the best investments I ever made! Me Ra and her instructors were great. I learned so much from all of them. The class is easy to follow with plenty of opportunities for questions and answers. In just a few short weeks, you will see the difference in your photos and never look back! Highly recommend!

This is workshop is the best way to learn as it releases you into the world to practice your own magic (or lack of it :)). A year later, I still practice every concept I learned. It is fun to see more and more magical pictures out of my camera. Highly recommend this course!

I am sharing the lesson pdfs by email to my dad. He is 86 yrs old and in poor health, but the one who taught me about taking pictures and the one who I share my photos with even now. He was blown away by Lesson 1 which, he said, he read several times and felt it was a very articulate and clear explanation of a challenging subject! He was a physicist with a passion for optics and has been taking pictures all his life. He has encouraged me so much that I wanted to include him in this process. I am mentioning this because I totally respect your “business” and I would not want to do anything unethical. My dad is deaf and almost blind, but he can see my pictures and do some reading on his computer! He said you knew as much about light as ANSEL ADAMS, but that YOU EXPLAINED IT BETTER!

As a Shadow Student, I love the Facebook page. It is great to observe the real time interaction of the Live Q&A (for our class), though I will admit it is hard not to jump in with questions! I find it helpful to see the photo critiques of others in addition to reading through the wealth of information. It is fun to be learning via the questions of others.

I believe with PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and MORE PRACTICE that the concepts will become clearer and hopefully more like second nature. It is difficult to “think” about camera settings and angles for magical light when your subject is a lightening-fast 2 year old.

I sincerely appreciate you and Brian taking the time for this online course. While I wouldn’t trade my (very) rural Minnesota lifestyle, one doesn’t find a photography workshop just down the street. You have an effective teaching style and your passion shines through. Thank you for getting me to pick up my camera again.

I have to say that this class has given me a huge boost of inspiration. The exercises, the critiques and also the shared critiques here on line. All of it has helped invigorate my spirit. I have enjoyed this class tremendously!!

Wow! Thanks for the compliment and encouragement! I think what actually made it click is to practice each exercise then look at my pictures on the computer, then seeing the critiques you would share with the group. I loved that format. There were a few things I just hadn’t thought of before, for instance, the light coming through the window and stepping away a few steps to get the right lighting if needed. I will continue to practice each lesson! Everyone of the instructors have been so great at encouraging and giving specific tips to make the photo better. I have loved this class! Thank you so much!

Thank you to Me Ra and team…this online course was just what I needed during a time of challenges and change in my life. With September’s arrival, I feel my creative spirit returning to find its roots in my new surroundings. I had my first photo shoot (all in manual!!!) this weekend, and I LOVED the results! I twas the least amount of time spent post processing. Did I make mistakes or have thoughts of “I should have..” –absolutely!! But this is part of my desire to grow personally and artistically. Thank you Me Ra and Brian, and all of the fantastic people who participated in this class. I enjoyed learning from each and every one of you!

Wonderful way to understand the magic behind your camera. I feel empowered and confident when taking my pictures now. And I love how I can refer back to the lessons over time to refresh my memory. Me Ra Koh has made it user friendly and explains with analogies, this was very helpful for me. Thank you for this opportunity!

I have taken the Confidence workshop and the Magical Light Course. I loved both and learned so so much. I feel really lucky to have been able to take both classes. I am 57, do not do this as a business, and I am a grandma. What I loved about the Confidence workshop was finally learning the technical side of photography from a women and not being made to feel like idiot for not knowing everything about the camera. What I loved about the Magical Light Course was learning how to use light to make my pictures look so much better. The Magical Light Course touches on the technical side also and if I remember correctly a person could learn how to shot in Manual mode just from taking that course. I have actually taken the Magical Light course twice, Mainly because I thought the first time I took it I did not devote as much time as I should have. So I took it again a couple of years later thinking I had more time to devote to the 4 weeks. Again, I felt like I did not devote the time that was needed. My issue was getting my kids (who are older) to model for me to complete the assignment and send in the pictures for the weekly critique (which is by far the best part of the class). I actually thought about taking the course again, but my youngest is graduating from high school and the month of June is so busy.( I have a new grandson who could be my model and he is a baby who can not run or talk back to me). If I could have only taken one or the other of the two, I would take the Magical Light Course. Since I am 57, I would have a hard time taking the class with a cross country move going on. But, you young kids now a days seem to be able to do it all! You will need internet access to get your weekly assignment and to up load your pictures. The class would probably be a nice distraction to the hassles of moving! And the critiques are awesome to receive. So sorry for the long post. Everything Mera and Brian do is top notch.

I have always wanted to go to a Confidence Workshop but it is difficult to get away for the weekend so this online Magical Light class was the perfect format for me to have an opportunity to work with Me Ra, whose work I love! This was the first online class that I took so I wasn’t sure if I would like the format, but I have to say that I loved it and I benefitted from it far more than I ever thought that I would. The format is multidimensional in that there are emails, videos, Facebook forums, virtual office hours, and comments and critiques on your individual photos and even those of some others that are shared with the group as learning experiences. The key here is that sharing of information. It is so nice to be amongst a group of women who are supportive, honest, helpful, and funny. That is also exactly how I would describe the critiques from Me Ra and Brian. I loved getting my weekly critiques, as they were packed with information on how to improve each individual photo and they were always written in a way that was fun and positive. Together, these elements helped me grow tremendously in 4 weeks and I am shocked that I could do this from the comfort of wherever I was, half of which was while I was at home and half during our family vacation. And (yay!) now I have all these amazing and magical photos that were my homework assignments! Don’t let anything stop you from taking this class! Thank you, Me Ra and Brian!!! You two are amazing and you have inspired me more than you know!

This is a fantastic workshop for anyone looking sharpen their photography skills and expand their creativity! While it may seem a little intimidating to consider being critiqued by two award-winning, phenomenal photographers, rest assured that Me Ra and Brian have your best interests at heart. Their honest, critical and supportive feedback on my individual photos was invaluable and I have learned so much in 4 short weeks. The weekly lessons are delivered in a variety of formats (email, reference documents, videos), but the highlight for me were the office hours (Q&A) that are hosted and available via our private Facebook group. While the weekly office hours are scheduled at various times to accommodate all schedules and time zones, if you are unable to participate live, you have a treasure trove of information to continuously refer back to. It was also great to learn from and share with my fellow class participants from all over the world, and I am sure our forum will be active long after class is over. Me Ra and Brian – thank you for continuing to challenge and inspire me! I am grateful and honored to be part of this amazing, dream-building community that you have created.

I honestly don’t know where to begin. Let me first say that MeRa and Brian are amazing. They feel like old friends. They are so positive and encouraging and energetic you instantly feel empowered.
I love the online class format. I felt the material was easy to follow and the videos helped tremendously. I couldn’t believe that I was using my camera on manual! Awesome feeling!.
Office hours were so much fun! I felt connected and energized from all the participants! Brian is too funny!
On a personal note, I needed this class. I haven’t done anything creative or just for me in so long. Thank you thank you thank you! I look forward to attending a confidence workshop in the near future! MeRa you are an inspiration! Love you guys!

Me Ra and Brian are two of the best teachers I’ve ever had, you feel like your in a class with them.Their enthusiasm and encouraging words make it fun and open you up to try new techniques. Love, LOVED this class and can’t wait to attend their 2 day Confidence class…and possibly another trip in the future.

This is an amazing course with fantastic teachers! Me Ra and Brian are inspiring, helpful, and so much fun! The critiques that were given on my photos each week were so helpful and will continue to help me grow in my photography journey. I looked forward to a new challenge all four weeks and being able to see the work of other participants is so inspiring. The office hours that are provided are a great time to get some answers to questions that may arise during the week. So sad that the four weeks have come to an end. I highly recommend this course! Thank you so much Me Ra and Brian!

I shadowed the class, and I am amazed at how much I have learned and how much I think I will continue to learn as I refer back to the materials. This class has provided me with a wealth of easy to understand information that I will continue to refer back to as I grow as a photographer.
I am just beginning to learn to shoot in manual, and I have just moved into a house that has amazing light inside and out. This class has inspired me by watching the other students and their growth, and it has empowered me to feel as I have more time to practice and put to use the knowledge gained from this class I will be able to take beautiful photos of my children and my loved ones by capturing the magical light.

Great course and this course and The Confidence Workshop has totally changed how I see light! I would highly recommend taking this course and hey if you can the workshop too! Brian and Me Ra are great teachers and not only do they get how to explain the techie part of photography in an understandable way but also the mental or emotional part of pushing through to learn more and get past frustrations you may have! I have taken other online courses before and I can tell you that there was no where near the same type of rapport or support that you will get from Brian and Me Ra. They are both so personable!

Magical Light far exceeded my expectations! I have a fairly good grasp on the technical aspects of photography, but I needed some help with creativity. Me Ra and Brian met me right at my level, and gently pushed me outside my comfort zone to help me grow. They were very encouraging and helpful in their critiques, and taught me that a picture isn’t good because it satisfies certain rules, but it’s good because the meaning and emotion of it.

Me Ra and Brian, I have to say a really big thank you for your feedback on my photos! It was so positive, encouraging, reinforcing and downright thrilling! In fact, to read that you see a seed of progress and potential in the pictures I’ve been turning in, even though they haven’t exactly matched the assignment the past two weeks. I really want to keep inching forwards with this, now the flames of something creative have started to glimmer back to life inside me (which have been almost extinct for quite a number of years now, subsumed to life, responsibilities, work etc…). I’m sooooo glad I signed up on this course, and really pleased we’ll still have our private Facebook group to share with through the summer! I do want to keep tiptoeing onward. Thank you from the UK!

Magical light was an amazing coarse. I loved every minute of it. I was really nervous about having my photos critiqued, but Me Ra and Brian made it my favorite part. They were so positive and encouraging and their suggestions were very inspirational. It’s so nice to take a coarse from people who truly enjoy helping others learn and grown. I can’t thank them enough!!

Oh….my….goodness… Who knew? I was stuck in the Matrix metering mode! It all makes sense now because I was sitting there trying to take shots for last week’s lesson, and I was rolling, rolling and rolling that dial all over the place trying to FIND THAT sweet spot between 0 and 1!!! Which explains why I had to take 300 photos just to get pictures light enough to even see the subjects face. Thank you Me Ra and Brian!!!

I have taken many photography classes over the years and THIS one was the best. THIS one made everything click. I could not figure out how I was supposed to manage all the components for taking a picture. Now, I am comfortably shooting in manual.

Love this course! It has really helped me to understand more about using light, whether inside or out, and my camera settings to get those photos with the “magical” light I am looking for. The manner in which the weekly classes are designed is great, and each week is a stepping stone to the next. Me Ra and Brian create a “safe” environment to learn and ask questions. And the individual feedback is invaluable!

I am blown away at how much I have learned during this photography class. Me Ra and Brian are so present and hands on during the entire 4 weeks of the class. I have gotten more out of this class then all the other classes I have taken, including other online classes about finding light. Their teaching style appeals to my learning skills and I never felt embarrassed or down on myself about the photos I shared. Their critiques were based on positive reinforcement. They encouraged me to redo my photos but maybe change a setting, placement, etc to correct it. When I redid the photo with their suggestions, that was when I learned the most!! I would highly recommend this class!!

I was so hesitant to take this on-line course. I am a little challenged when it comes to uploading, downloading, and technical issues in general. I was confident after taking a workshop and a trip to Italy with MeRa and Brian that Brian would hold my hand through the process. I was also hesitant to have my photos critiqued. I am a photo hobbyist definitely not a professional or have aspirations to become one. I had 2 strikes going into this class. I can tell you my photos are out of the ballpark compared to where they were before. I look at light so differently and my photos are pretty incredible!

I would highly recommend this class…it is a real game changer!

Such an amazing course!! So worth the expense and way more.
We were challenged every week and taught how to see and use light in ways I probably never would have thought to or discovered on my own.
The investment that Me Ra and Brian put into this course is what makes it what it is.
The one-on-one critiques are incredible and where the foundation for growth is.
    Highly recommend it!!

I highly recommend this course! I’ve already taken 2 Confidence Workshops and wondered if I would learn anything new because my brain is so full. I decided to take it to keep me accountable to practice practice practice, and it worked! I was really surprised at the time Brian and Me Ra took to provide such thoughtful, personal, encouraging and comprehensive critiques, wow. Each week I was excited to get the next homework assignment, they were so fun! And a shift happened for me in understanding (and searching!) for light to tell a story. For sure a lot of unexpected “aha ” moments happened.

This course is so wonderful to learn and capture the ‘Magical Light’. Brian and Me Ra are very kind and helpful people.
Even though I was a shadow student, the lessons were easy enough to understand and learn. I will be re-reading the lessons and re-watching Me Ra’s videos and will be practicing all the techniques and tips of the trade to improve my photography skills.
Thank you for making this course affordable!!

I shadowed this course, as I thought I wouldn’t have the time to keep up as a full attendee. I was skeptical that I’d learn much as a shadow attendee in an online course, but I really do understand how to use my camera better now. It was a wonderful experience, and, even more valuable, I am now connected with the greater MeRa community. I look forward to trying out another course sometime soon!

This course was so great in growing me as a photographer. I see light in new ways and I am better able to capture the moment after taking this course. I am especially grateful for the time MeRa Koh and Brian Tausend take for the critiques. The feedback is invaluable!!! I am having so much fun shooting, knowing that the more I put into practice what they have taught me, the more confident I will become, and the better results I will achieve!

I have been following Me Ra since 2011 when my daughter was born and came across her book Your Baby in Pictures. I have learned so much from her and Brian about taking photo’s of my kids. Not only the technical side of it all, but also just capturing those magical moments of my babies! I took this course as a shadow student and could not have been more pleased. The weekly assignments were so detailed and had a wealth of information! It made learning fun and easy and Me Ra takes you through it all step by step. With a busy life I knew I could not commit myself to the full course at this time. BUT what was so great about it was that I could still follow along with all the other students on our private Facebook page and felt like such a big part of it all and was learning from them too. Take this course, it will teach you everything you need to know about capturing those magical light photo’s! Me Ra and Brian are awesome, you will love them!

This class is amazing! It has helped me improve my photography more than anything else I have come across. I first took this class as a shadow participant, and then I referred back on the knowledge gained and the resources provided in the course all year long. The following year I took the class as a full participant. I was blown away with how much I learned. I loved how the lessons were set up. The “homework” me analyze so many things that I had never thought of before. As I learned more I would develop so many questions that were answered in the next lesson. Each lesson and homework assignment was set up so I was ready to absorb the information in the next lesson.
Through the weekly personal critique I learned so much direct at exactly what I needed for my photography journey, but we also all benefited from the questions other students posed through the Facebook group. I can try imagine learning more from an online course than I did from this one. I may take it again one day!

So many good things have already been written up about this course, but wanted to take the opportunity to confirm all of the goodness it has to offer.
The class has been set up to be very supportive and a place of personal growth. No judgements, just opportunities to learn and stretch oneself’s photographic skills.
In the past, previous photo critiques have been stressful and nerve wrecking. After overcoming my initial fears, I found myself to be the biggest critic. Brain and Me Ra’s critique were like sitting down in a coffee shop, hanging out with a good friend and talking about photos. No big judgements with lots of kindness and support. They truly want to see their students succeed and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure you get your money’s worth!

Highly recommend this course!! I have been nervous about photographing people up until now and preferred to stick to landscape and travel photography! This course has improved my skills vastly. Finding the magical light takes your photos from ordinary to extraordinary and who doesn’t want that?!? It’s not a huge time commitment however the more time you put into it each week, the more you’ll get out of the course through the group feedback, interaction and the photo critiques.

Magical Light is a class for EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER. It is totally worth every penny. This class challenged me beyond my limits and at times annoyed me because it forced me to push myself, but the positive results were definitely SO, SO WORTH IT! I am now seeing light so differently, AND MY PHOTOS HAVE IMPROVED TREMENDOUSLY! The class stretched my limits as a photographer, and it has paid off. The gentle, positive critiques were absolutely beneficial. My photography has grown leaps and bounds over this 4 week period, and I know that will continue. Thank you so much, Me Ra and Brian. Such a wonderful experience! You are a blessing!
