Tell Me More

Are You One of These Women?
  • I take great photos here and there, but have no idea how you did it or how to recreate it.  This is what Me Ra calls “Happy Accidents”.
  • My photos turn out decent when outside, but when I go inside my photos come out blurry or look poorly lit.  I can’t figure out what I’m missing.
  • I LOVE taking photos but feel intimidated by the technology.  Picturing myself with confidence when holding my camera almost feels impossible.
  • I’ve taken a photography class at the local camera store, community college or from another pro, and I left feeling completely discouraged and fear I’m not smart enough to “get it”.
  • I’m a mom and as a result after having kids I’ve lost sight of my own creativity and passion, and I really need this for myself. But this would be the first time I’ve ever left the kids and that feels intense.  And yet, they’re ready and I need this.
  • I am wonderful grandma who wants to take great photos of my grandchildren. (Our grandma attendees inspire Me Ra beyond words!)
  • I’m a single woman who LOVES photography and dreams of traveling with my camera. 🙂
  • A working professional who needs a weekend with other women who also want to feed their creative self.
  • I’m a pro photographer, but I’m held back from full confidence because there are holes in what I understand technically.
  • Maybe you are this lady (I’ve met a number of these ladies over the years).  You know how to get decent photos.  You are even charging some money when friends ask you to take their photos. But you don’t feel confident with the technical side so it keeps you from raising your prices or allowing yourself to go to the next level.  You are stuck behind a glass ceiling.
If you answered “YES, that is ME!” to any one of these descriptions, our 2-Day CONFIDENCE Workshop is for YOU!  All these women and more have attended our workshop over the last 10 YEARS (a decade! woo hoo!!) and left with full hearts, strong confidence and creative vision!

*There are a number of photographers who won’t let you take their workshop if you live within a certain radius of them for fear of you stealing their ideas and teaching your own workshops.  I say “The More the Merrier!”  For 10 years, I’ve had the honor of raising up amazing, talented, creative women who have gone on to launch their own businesses and workshops.  If you leave this workshop with inspiration to empower more women, I can’t think of a greater compliment.  All women are welcome!  This is a weekend about empowering YOU whether you are a pro or beginner.

2020 Confidence Workshops;
DALLAS, TEXAS on January 18th and 19th 2020!
Limited to 15 Women Who Want Confidence with Their Camera!

Guess what?!  2017 marked our 10 year anniversary of teaching the CONFIDENCE Workshop!  I can hardly believe it! A DECADE of inspiring thousands of women with confidence!

Brian and I have had the honor of empowering over a thousand women through our Confidence Workshop.  Many women have gone on to launch successful, amazing photography businesses.  Some women have started yoga studios, bakeries, become the photographer for non-profit organizations, taught a shorter version of our workshop to moms in their local area and more!  Not to mention all the moms who just wanted to know how to move beyond “happy accident” photos of their kids!  That’s the beautiful, powerful secret to confidence.  Once you find confidence in one area of your life, it seeps into every other area!

With great excitement, we can’t wait for you to experience this powerful two days with us.  Yes, it’s about confidence with your camera.  Learning to shoot in manual mode (no matter how much of a beginner you are) in two days.

But it’s about so much more!

True to this workshop, time tested (and approved :)), we are excited to start the day with understanding the mechanics of your camera.  We walk you through 8 essential camera settings that most people never learn, as well as tricks to consistent focus, and in depth teaching on how the magic three work together (Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO).  We’ve been teaching this workshop for 10 years and every single time we have a wide mix of both beginners and pros.  Ultimately they all want the same thing: confidence.  We start Day One at the beginning because I’ve found that a number of women lack confidence because they have holes in their technical understanding.  We cover ALL the holes during the first half of the day.

In the second half of the day, you’ll learn about indoor lighting so you can capture shots of your loved ones in difficult lighting. After this weekend, low light will never hold you back again!  After lunch we will put our understanding into hands-on practice that is CONFIDENCE building.

We’ll process the FULL morning with a Live Shoot of Moms and Baby Models.

We end the day with storytelling and composition.  We’ll dive into our philosophy “Refuse to Say Cheese” and teach you the power behind this phrase.  As a result, you’ll go back to sleep that night with a whole new world of ideas on how to capture authentic story telling photos!

Saturday (or Tuesday for NYC) night is also an optional group dinner for the workshop ladies only (husbands and travel companions are invited to Friday night’s Meet and Greet).

Day Two will pick up where we left off. We’re going to continue to demystify tough lighting and camera settings by teaching you how to meter!  You will ALL be shooting in manual by noon on the second day, no matter how green you are!  We’ll practice with a second Live Shoot or possibly a powerful photo critique (the rains will decide which of the two we do–but both are powerful learning tools), and then we will walk you through our Post Process steps as we demonstrate Adobe® Lightroom®, turning images to black and white, editing, what’s the difference between a JPG and RAW image, etc.

We’ll also teach you how to use an external flash when you don’t have enough natural light.  Consequently you’ll be amazed at how easy this is when we walk you through the steps with demonstrations.

Depending on the groups interest, we’ll talk about the in’s and out’s of starting your own side business too. (But this depends on the needs of the group.) We’re also going to cover the question of what to do with your images? Also, are stock photography options available to you, what is the bottom line of blogging, and where should you have your work printed and why?

The BEST part that everyone always loves most is the models!

We’ll also have models join us (both adults and kids), so you can practice EVERY THING we’ve been teaching you. And true to our workshops, we’ll sprinkle our time with creative exercises and inspiration that make our weekend so special.

As a result, you will end the two days filled with CONFIDENCE, refreshed, inspired, and possibly shooting in Manual like it’s nobody’s business. (I promise, shooting in manual is way easier than people make it sound, but one step at a time.)

BONUS PRODUCTS, $500 plus Value!

A few years ago, when the recession was unbearable for so many, Brian and I made a radical change in our workshops.  Instead of bringing all our products (DVDS and 101 Kits) to the workshop to sell at a discounted workshop rate, we decided to gift all the products to our workshop attendees.  The total product value is close to $600.  This is our way to help you beat financial barriers and find fulfillment in your photography aspirations whether photography is a hobby or dream!

Upon registering for the workshop, attendees will receive the following;

Complete DVD Download Set:  Refuse to Say Cheese and Beyond the Green Box (not a hard copy but a link to view and download at home) before the workshop.  The set will help prepare you for the workshop.  And when the workshop is over, and your new tools are feeling a little rusty, you will have the set to watch again and again!

After the workshop, each attendee will also be gifted all of the popular 101 Kits, including the newly revised and extended Portrait 101 Kit! Ultimately if photography is a possible part-time business you’d like to pursue, then Brian and I want to make sure you are set up for success!

We know these Bonus Products will equip you, and you will always feel supported and empowered by us!

If for some reason you should need to cancel, we will apply your payment(s) as credit to a future CONFIDENCE or online workshop within 24 months of your original workshop up to 45 days before the workshop weekend.

If you need to cancel within the 45 days leading up to the workshop, we will do our best to fill your spot and apply your payment(s) to a future workshop within the next 24 months. But we can’t guarantee this.

If your spot cannot be filled within the 45 days, your workshop payment(s) will be forfeited.

This is the policy for all our online and in-person workshops, excluding our travel “Portrait of the World” workshops.

This coarse was amazing! I enjoyed every minute of it!! There was so much great information and it was presented so that everyone had fun and learned a ton. There were so many things I have read about, but it didn’t click until this seminar. We had everyone from professional photographers to beginners in our group and everyone had a blast. Me Ra and Brian took time to get to know everyone, and they were amazing people to get to know. If your asking yourself if this coarse is for you, no matter your level, the answer is defiantly YES!!

I am not a professional photographer, but consider myself a serious hobbyist. Even though I’ve read many books and taken a few photography courses, I still had gaps in my knowledge, and this class really helped to fill them in. MeRa and Brian are really wonderful people, and I am so happy I was able to meet them and learn so much from them! I would without a doubt recommend this workshop!!!

I have never set out to take a class in an area of the unfamiliar, primarily because I was terrified to step into a room where I had absolutely no experience. And then the Confidence workshop became a blinking spot on my radar screen…and it would not go away. It was like I heard a gentle whisper say, “This is for you!”

Before I knew it, I was in a room with about with 14 other women on a bright Saturday morning in September. They all knew a lot more about photography that I ever thought existed. I literally knew how to turn my camera on and off. And the night before the conference started, I learned where the battery was. No, I am not a hermit living under a rock. I am a wife, mother of two young & inquisitive girls, a highly engaged member at our church, involved in the PTA and a program manager for a technology company growing at the speed of light. My camera was simply not a priority. But, at the Confidence workshop, I was safe, and surrounded by women (and Brian) who helped me navigate through my camera (which turned out to have limitations.) I was nestled right in the middle of the perfect environment which challenged my brain to peacefully think outside of my comfort zone. I was allowed to run my own race, which looked so different than everybody else’s. I was allowed to safely change my ignorance… into knowledge. And I loved every single moment of it.

The Confidence workshop is so much more, and so much deeper, than learning how to enhance your photography knowledge and prowess. You may be able to get that at the run-of-the mill photography class up the street. The Confidence workshop, however, is about becoming free in areas which seem to have limitations; even those beyond the camera. It’s about allowing yourself time to realize that there is God-made creative on the inside of you just waiting for a little bit of attention. And it does not have to look like the photography contemporaries of today. It can be uniquely and beautifully yours!

Things like that can only be imparted by those who are gifted to do so. And Me Ra and Brian are gifted indeed. You will laugh until your side hurts. And just when you think the jokes are over, Brian has a brand new arsenal. And yes, you will realize why your swag bag comes complete with a small package of tissue.

If you are a beginner, close your eyes and take the leap! This class is for you!

I can finally take my camera off of AUTOMATIC! I can actually tell you what the heck aperture, shutter speed, and ISO does! I can also tell you why pictures have that beautiful blurry background or images can be in focus or out of focus. BUT I couldn’t tell you that BEFORE I went to the workshop. I had a fancy camera and absolutely DID NOT know how to use it and was actually scared of using my camera. AFTER the two day workshop, I have found the confidence and knowledge that I needed.
Me Ra, Brian, and Janna were all wonderful. The way the workshop was taught in the meeting room and hands on with the models really made all the difference. You can keep trying to figure it by watching videos tutorial or reading books, but it’s not the same. Learning from such an excellent group of people and being amongst your peers is the key to learning. So don’t be shy or let this opportunity pass you by…put yourself first and find your inner happiness. It really is a click away!

Do not hesitate to take this workshop, you will not regret a moment for all the learning you will get. I have played with the camera for many years and taken a few good courses, but leaving this class I do feel confident to go on and be able to photograph better and more fun than before. MeRa and Brian packed the weekend with lots of info and hands on instruction, they are both there for you to help you understand. Know matter where you were coming from in knowledge you go home with Confidence!

I learned so much this weekend–not only about camera settings, equipment, and ways to photograph an energetic two year old–I learned more about myself and my creativity!

The class was full of amazing women–and Me Ra, Brian and Janna are great teachers. They meet you at your current level, and gently and with humor move you forward. They clearly love teaching–and we are the lucky beneficiaries of that.

I enjoyed the weekend, start to finish, and definitely recommend the workshop!

I took Me Ra’s Confidence workshop some years ago with my sister-in-law in So Cal. Teresa and I both had AHA! after AHA! moment and learned so much about our cameras that we didn’t know we didn’t know! Me Ra and Brian explained everything so simply and clearly in non-technical terms that I had been trying to understand for so long in manuals, articles and books. For me, my camera went from being the partner who refused to tell me what I was doing wrong to a powerful tool and extension of my vision. No more guesswork; I left there knowing how to tell my camera what I want rather than spending unnecessary time taking too many shots at trial and error to get the right exposure. We learned camera use, settings, how to use light, working with different subjects, seeing them creatively and beautifully, and even some post-process workflow tips (just to name a few highlights). And if it couldn’t get any better, Me Ra & Brian are beyond fun and our group felt like old friends by the time the weekend was over. Confidence is exactly the right name for this course.

This was an amazing weekend with a wonderful group of women. It is a weekend full of information and anything you need to know about shooting in manual with your camera. Me Ra & Brian make it fun and have a great way of teaching at whatever your photography level happens to be. The photoshoots were extremely helpful to practice what we had learned throughout the weekend.

It is a weekend of discovery not only with your creative side but, also about yourself. This was something I wanted to do for myself and so happy I did.

MeRa and Brian have managed to put together the only photography course I’ve ever taken where I have walked away feeling confident and inspired about my photography. I take lots of pictures, work on my photography constantly and read and study to try to master the how-tos of my camera settings, but nothing has “stuck” the way that the instruction in MeRa’s CONFIDENCE workshop has. MeRa and Brian manage to take women at every range of the spectrum in photography–from absolute beginner to professional photographer and instruct and encourage them in their photography skills. With basic, easy-to-understand instruction they teach you exactly what you need to know to gain control over your camera and the outcome of your photographs. Their process is clear and their lessons are balanced with hands-on time to actually put what you’re learning into practice immediately. They provide freedom to try, test, fail and succeed and are there to walk you through each part of the process. The instruction was invaluable and the hands-on element of being able to put what we were learning in the classroom into immediate practice “in the field” was key.
But don’t think this class is only about photography. You will leave inspired and renewed and tap into parts of your creative spirit that having been lying dormant. If you are burned out, tapped out, uninspired or trying to figure out where life is taking you next, I would encourage you to gift this weekend to yourself. And see what becomes of it.

I attended Me Ra’s CONFIDENCE workshop, my first, and I must say I was impressed. As a hobbyist, I have struggled off and on to truly understand and “know” my camera. By the end of day 1 I was much better acquainted with what my camera (and I) was capable of! Having taken several classes in the past, I found this workshop to be very different. The instruction was not sterile or purely technical and the level of openness of the course, in general, allowed me to be comfortable experimenting with what I was learning. Me Ra brought a sense of calm while at the same time motivating me with her aura of positivity and energy. Two things that really stand out from Me Ra’s instruction were her discussions about becoming aware of the light and the three elements of story telling. I remain conscious of them as a result and the quality of my pictures reflect that. Brian’s ability to use analogy in his technical instruction made it easy to comprehend and apply practically, whereas other classes confused me! The structure of the workshop allowed us time to learn early each day but then apply, hands-on, what we learned each afternoon. The live models, consisting of moms, babies and families, allowed me to really get a sense of how to apply what I learned. The fact we had time to reflect on each day, as a group, allowed for reflection and absorption of the teaching outside of the workshop.

Me Ra was truly inspirational and I have come away a much more confident photographer! I have found a renewed interest in my camera and the people and things I love to photograph. I would recommend this workshop to anyone looking to build their confidence in photography.

I was just going to the class as a 40th bday present to myself, so I could meet a few people who loved photography like I did and learn how to use my new DSLR. Since then I’ve been slow cooking a business when all I wanted was great photos of my own kids. It was very fun, relaxed, but I found learning technical and frustrating. Confiding in Brian, he said “you will not get it until you have taken about 3500 photos” It was so true, 6 months after I was there and though I never expected to be bold enough to charge, I’ve do! I’ve shot weddings, been hired as a 2nd shooter, done corporate events, headshots, have a website and pay taxes. Thank you again to MeRa and Brian for all the warm guidance!! Cheers! Sarah

Saying that this workshop is worth every penny is such an understatement! The energy, knowledge and experience that Brian and Me Ra bring to the Confidence Workshop is amazing. I came away feeling confident (that was the goal right?!) in my ability to shoot in manual mode because of their amazing ability to communicate technical knowlegde in a down to earth way. And then to top it off we had a chance to shoot in real world situations with realistic challenges so we could hit those challenges and have support in figuring out what to do. An amazing experience!

This was an awesome conference!!! Not only did I figure out technical stuff I need to figure out for indoor and outdoor photography, it benefitted me creativity wise too. I also already feel more confident about using my camera. Such a great workshop!!! Can’t recommend it enough.

I knew from her very first appearance on the Nate Berkus show that Me Ra Koh – The Photo Mom was a woman I had to meet. Her open-heart and amazing skills as a family photographer spoke directly to me. It was like watching an old friend whom I hadn’t yet met. I was finally able to spend time with Me Ra, her husband Brian and their incredibly talented daughter Pascaline last weekend in Texas at their January 2016 Confidence Workshop. I wanted nothing more than to be there, but was also feeling mixed emotions as I left my husband and daughters at home for the first time. Now that I am a “Confidence Grad” I can say without hesitation that my weekend with Me Ra was unforgettable, transformative, inspiring and SO MUCH FUN!

This letter I wrote to all of the grads pretty much sums up my entire experience……….Hopefully it will give insight to anyone who is considering signing up.

“Full disclosure: This time last week I was in my room at NYLO and feeling very homesick. I may or may not have shed a few tears because I was unsure of what the weekend would bring. I kept telling myself that as soon as the workshop started, all would be well. I was right. Now that a week has passed, I am looking back and wishing we could do it all over again. The workshop was one of the best experiences of my life. As you know, those initial tears weren’t the only ones I shed last weekend. Thank you to everyone that shared their stories, tears, jokes and words of encouragement. I had an amazing time with all of you. Brian Tausend included ;P
    xoxoxoxoxo, Jess”

    Thank you Me Ra! xo

I stayed up late after the last night of the workshop because I was so emotional and couldn’t seem to stop the tears of joy from flowing! This workshop gave me what I was looking for: inspiration, confidence, and more skill. I can’t recommend this workshop enough to those who need some extra spark to their photos, skill, and soul!

In a word, this class was amazing. I can’t say enough good stuff. I learned about my camera but, more important, I came out feeling like I could take on the world. I feel refreshed. I feel excited. I feel confident. Take this class. Just trust me.

Go! Do it for yourself, for your art, for your health, for your passion for life. It’s so much more than a photography workshop. I’ve been to a few of those. 😉 To say this workshop was life-changing is an understatement. It was more than I ever could have imagined and more than I even knew I needed. Surrounded by feminine photography love, I found myself again. That’s a gift. Thank you to all the Me Ra team- you are changing lives one hilarious, real, raw, refreshing, creative, technical-yet-doable, story-sharing, soul-inspiring, weekend at a time. Thank you! <3 I've always had a passion for sharing birth joy with Momma-babies and families and now I have a tool for capturing that story for them. Priceless.

I attended the January 2016 Confidence Workshop in Dallas – and what an incredible weekend it was! Me Ra and Brian were so fun, inspiring and informative. They gave me the shot in the arm I needed to keep going in photography – and to succeed.

An added bonus: After only one weekend, I have some wonderful new friends — Me Ra, Brian, and the really awesome women in the group. I hope we stay in touch and encourage each other for years to come.

If you’re thinking about attending a Confidence Workshop, stop thinking about it and just do it.

No need to think twice about taking this class and getting to know the true inner beauty of Me Ra and Brian. I joined the list of lovely ladies who I now call friends, hoping to be a better photographer and gain the confidence that I was seriously lacking as a photographer. Not only did I gain all that I’d hoped for, but I left with so much more. As soon as class started, Me Ra warmed my soul with a smile and made me feel like an old friend. Instantly everything fell into place, and I knew I was in the right place at the right time. When the weekend was over, I was a new person on the inside, with confidence in my equipment, confidence in my ability, and confident that I can indeed tell a great story in pictures. I am now even more excited about my future as a photographer and gained a great new cast of supporters that walked the journey with me. None of us wanted it to end. I promise you will feel the same. Big shout-out to Janna, who is awesome with follow-up and getting the party started, among all the behind the scenes stuff we don’t see. And of course you will love Brian. He’s always smiling, a total hoot and a great help with Lightroom and technical camera stuff. Don’t wait, join today, it’s a great class!! 🙂

I was worried that a photography retreat called the Confidence Workshop might be too much about feelings and not enough about photography technique. This weekend taught me that solid technique is valuable, but deep feelings and emotions are more important, valuable beyond measure.

MeRa and Brian create a safe space to explore and learn, they bring a welcome and positive energy that is contagious. I met women in our group who felt like long-lost friends; they were accepting and warm and encouraging in ways I could never expect. And I learned to trust my camera, to trust my instincts and trust my heart to photograph beautiful, authentic images.

The Confidence Workshop helped me figure out that my story is about strength, perseverance and being ridiculously JOYFUL! You should go, find your story too!

What a great weekend this was! Who knew learning about your camera could be so much fun! MeRa and Brian make the weekend fun and full of laughter! They are both very patient with all the questions that are thrown at them and I appreciate the time Brian took with me when he saw I was getting frustrated to just say encouraging words. I left the workshop with a greater knowledge of my camera, photography and new friends! When I returned home and told my husband about my experience he was very happy that I attended and he really felt that it was what I needed in order to move forward in my photography journey and even on a personal level! I would highly recommend this workshop…it is a wonderful experience!

I attended the April 2016 CONFIDENCE Workshop and it was more than just a photography workshop, it was a transformational experience! MeRa and Brian lovingly share their personal stories and expertise to gently urge you out of your comfort zone and allow your creativity to flourish. They teach from the heart in a safe and nurturing environment. I learned, laughed, cried and shared wonderful memories with a group of courageous women I am proud to call my friends. The inspirational workshop exceeded all of my expectations and I highly recommend it!

I had the best experience at the April CONFIDENCE Workshop! I have never just splurged on myself and this time I did and I deserved it. MeRa and Brian are just so open and accepting in their approach. They are truly teachers from the heart. I learned more than great photography tips, I learned to not be afraid to try new things and that we all make photo mistakes, just adjust that dial and try again till you get the look you want. I am looking forward to learning more in the next online lighting course that I just signed up for. I recommend this workshop to everyone!

I still smile every single time I think of my experience at the April Confidence Workshop with MeRa and Brian……I only wish I could do it all over again! This was completely unlike any photography workshop/class/lecture that I’ve ever attended (and I have attended a few). MeRa and Brian teach in such a clear and concise and NON-INTIMIDATING way that it just puts everyone at ease. MeRa threw away some of the “hard, fast rules” of photography that I had always read about in books and …….lo, and behold!!! My photos are so much better now!!!! I met so many amazing women who love photography as much as I do and for the first time ever, spent an entire weekend focused on that passion —- these are “my people”! What a special weekend and I would recommend it to anyone of any level of photography!!

I attended the April 2016 Confidence Workshop, and it was such an incredible weekend. First, MeRa and Brian are phenomenal teachers. They explain the ins and outs of photography in a way that makes it a thousand times easier to understand than any book or tutorial. Plus, they are so sweet, encouraging, and FUNNY! I literally smiled and laughed the entire weekend! Not only did I leave the weekend with more confidence in my photography, but with many wonderful, new friends…ladies that share my love for photography. I love that we continue to encourage and learn from each other.

I CANNOT say enough good things about the Confidence workshop or sing the praises of MeRa and Brian loud enough. Throughout the weekend they took on the roll of teachers, story tellers, listeners, photography gurus, comedians, sympathizers, encouragers, and coaches among countless others. The way they teach photography actually MAKES SENSE, which is something I had trouble finding before this workshop. You will leave this conference wanting to keep in touch with them, wanting to follow everything they do, and if you’re like me, you’ll want to begin your own journey to build a business that would make them proud. MeRa and Brian help so much to encourage dream building, both before and after the Conference, and it is inspiring to say the least.

Besides the priceless interaction you will have with the photography experts, your experience with the other attendees will be just as powerful. Throughout our weekend at the together we laughed together, told stories with each other, learned from each other, and even cried together. I honestly felt like that group of women was put in that room on that weekend by God for a very specific reason. Five months after we attended we are still encouraging and offering tips and advice to each other.

You will leave this Conference both inspired and empowered. No matter what your level of experience and comfortability with photography, this workshop is life changing.

I love how this workshop filled in all the technical holes and gave me a freedom to start over with a solid foundation! There’s so much hands-on learning. I love Me Ra and Brian’s stories! The whole weekend is simply rejuvenating! And I will be going to Thailand! It’s on my list!

The #1 thing I learned from this weekend is that being in manual mode doesn’t have to be complicated! I LOVED learning that I can set up my ISO, Aperture, and only adjust my shutter speed depending on the shot. I loved the shared experiences with the other women. It was also nice hearing and learning from questions that others asked who had a little more experience with photography. Overall, this workshop is so motivating! I can’t imagine anything I would change! My experience was GREAT!

This is an empowering weekend! The one thing I got out of the workshop more than anything else was to stop expecting perfection and instead concentrate on the fact that I’m learning all the time. Me Ra’s positive attitude and encouragement helped me to keep trying the tough things. Brian’s hand and finger examples for knowing what kind of lens to buy to depth of field where very helpful (and funny)!

The one thing I got out of the Confidence Workshop was HOW TO USE MY CAMERA!! Me Ra and Brian’s formula for setting up a technical picture gave me the freedom to shoot from the heart! I was a complete beginner! Doing this workshop and the Portrait of Italy workshop have been awesome experiences! Me Ra and Brian always create a safe environment that leaves you empowered!

I took the September Confidence Workshop and would describe this experience as PHENOMENAL!
One of the things I loved most was the opportunity to try out what we were learning with real models. It gave me the “permission” to test out the technical aspect of the camera in real situations.
I also loved the honesty of Me Ra and Brian’s approach. How they encouraged us to focus on one thing to change at a time versus trying to tackle everything at once. So freeing!

I also took Me Ra’s Magical Light online course and was excited to attend the Confidence Workshop! This workshop was WONDERFUL! A lot of what Me Ra shared sounded like my own heart and was speaking to me, reaffirming a lot of things for my own path. So much clarification happened. I have been thinking about going to people’s homes for photo shoots but afraid they won’t have good light. This workshop taught me how to use window light no matter how dark their home! And thanks Brian for the trick with back button focus!

The one word I would choose to describe this weekend…”connection”.
    Connection with my camera.
Connection with the art of photography.
Connection with the group of women.

I left with the confidence to pick up my camera and shoot/experiment in manual mode. The technical details were taught in the most simplistic and FUN ways! And the opportunity to watch and learn in a hands-on environment is amazing! There isn’t any thing I would change about this weekend with Me Ra and Brian!

The things I enjoyed most about the Confidence workshop were Me Ra and Brian’s patience in meeting us all where we were at. Their sweet nature in dealing with everyone no matter how beginner level you are. And most of all, watching Me Ra work with the models!

This workshop gave me the freedom to start! And I’m learning how to start with my “good” camera!

I took the September 2016 Confidence Workshop, and the biggest thing I learned was how to set my camera up technically, so that I can actually be creative! The best part was Brian’s funny analogies and Me Ra’s way of breaking things down into an understandable process. I also came hoping for connections, and “connections” would be my number one word in finishing this workshop!

I went to Me Ra and Brian’s Italy workshop, and I did their Confidence Workshop. I love how this weekend taught me how to use light, both indoors and outdoors, and shooting into the sun to capture back light! I’d never done that before!
My favorite part is the hands-on learning with Brian and Me Ra, working with the babies and family models and practicing how to use window light!
This workshop and Italy are OUTSTANDING workshops that I tell all my friends about!

I took the Confidence Workshop in 2009 and it was exactly what I needed to boost my self-esteem and jump into special needs photography. Me Ra and Brian break down the technicalities of photography so that it makes sense to every day people like me. 🙂 I had watched tutorials, read blogs, and read manuals, but nothing made sense until I took their workshop. It was where I had numerous “a-ha” moments. During the workshop, I not only learned how to use my camera and how to capture breathtaking images that capture the individual’s personalities, but I also learned a lot about myself and my level of creativity that I didn’t know existed. Hands down, this is THE best workshop for those wanting the confidence to start a photography business. You also walk away with a new set of friends and tons of memories from a very memorable weekend.

I took this workshop in 2011, because “I JUST want to take better pictures of my daughter”. I was already shooting in manual, but the hands-on environment helped me fine-tune several things. Me Ra and Brian are both so full of heart and energy, it was exactly what I needed to take my photography to the next level. Beyond photography knowledge, Me Ra is soooo inspiring, and allowed me to be open to WHAT ELSE could be possible if I got rid of the word JUST. “I want to take better pictures of my daughter” AND what else? I’m only limited by my imagination. I started my business shortly thereafter, and it’s been wonderful to check in with Me Ra throughout the photography community over the years. I highly recommend it!

I feel like I’ve been waiting 7 years to write this email to you. I’ve always wanted to reach out, follow-up, check in….not expecting you to remember me, but wanting you to understand the impact that you not only had on me….that you were truly the catalyst that led to everything that has happened over the past 7 years. And I am just so grateful. I don’t know that I’ve had the words to articulate it until now.

I was suddenly taken back to my quiet self in 2009, full of doubt, and remembered a moment sitting there with all of you….as I listened to you that day in 2009, I suddenly had a full-body shiver, tingling type moment….when I KNEW. I knew what I was going to do, I knew that I wasn’t going to stop, and I knew I was going to make it happen. While I sat there quietly in class, I wanted to jump on top of the table and scream with excitement….”I’M GOING TO DO THIS!!!” And slowly, over the years, I put that remaining doubt aside….and I’ve thrived. I can’t believe I’m typing that or saying it out loud, but I really, really have. I’m running a photography business shooting exactly what I want to shoot, connecting with clients that I LOVE, have a returning base of families that I love and can’t wait to see each year….but most of all – I LOVE WHAT I’M DOING. I mean, like love it so much, I want to cry when I think about it.

And YOU were the catalyst. Had I not sat there with you that weekend in 2009, listened to your words, had you give feedback on my work…I’m not sure I would have found that confidence on my own.

If you’d made it this far in reading this, bless you. This was all to say….thank you. MeRa, you have been such a gift and blessing in my life…I don’t know that I’ll ever have the chance to tell you in person, but couldn’t go another day without letting you know.

THANK YOU. From the bottom of my heart.

I’ve been mulling over so many of the things you said. I left feeling inspired, purposeful and a bit emotional (but that’s a good thing). You know how to captivate an audience but still make it feel personal. I love your honesty and humility, it makes you so relatable. You don’t shy away from sharing your failings and frustrations. You are a breath of fresh air — filled with a grace and wisdom from above. I hope you know how much you moved me. Encouraged me. Validated me. You are so special. I found the Confidence Workshop because I was a student with Brian in the Lightroom Organization class. I knew that if I got 1/2 out of this workshop that I did with the Organization class that I could conquer my camera and the dilemma I had with light. I not only became comfortable with light but got the most confidence using manual on my camera. Who would have thought that a 65 year old hobbiest of photography would be comfortable and confident using manual!!! Watch out! I’m over the top happy with my camera and possibly might surprise my family with the best of all photos!! Yea and much appreciation!

I waited nearly ten years for this workshop, and it would have been worth waiting ten more. This weekend was an extraordinary blessing creatively, spiritually, and emotionally.

I’m still processing being able to attend. Spending time with someone you admire professionally but even more so personally was so good for the soul, and it also helped reawaken the creative side of my spirit. This group of women had a synergy and chemistry that was energizing and safe all at the same time. Photography can be so healing. Me Ra and Brian set a relaxed and HILARIOUS tone which created a safe space to be creatively vulnerable with each other and connect in ways far beyond photography!

I loved the opportunity to walk through Lightroom with Brian. I’m still culling and (attempting to) edit, the truly lovely families who allowed us to swarm on them like a pack of camera-wielding puppies.

I shared the experience with an amazing group of ladies that ranged in age from college school student to grandmas. I loved being immersed in photography with a group of passionate women for an entire weekend!

Our workshop leaders, MeRa Koh and her husband Brian, were excellent teachers and mentors. I loved learning how a photo shoot works behind-the-scenes with an amazing photographer! I want to share a handful of the photos I made during our practice photo shoots. Working with the families was such a joy! I really appreciate their willingness to be part of our experience.

This workshop didn’t disappoint. I loved how warm and supportive they both are throughout the weekend. They were accessible and made sure to spend one-on-one time with every participant. They’re both AMAZING!
I learned how to be present in the moment and that I will miss a few good shots in order to capture great ones.
I also learned that I only have to spend a little time in the beginning to capture the right camera settings, and then I can make small tweaks if necessary.
I started this weekend shooting in Auto mode and left shooting in Manual mode!
My only suggestion is to make the weekend longer! 🙂

If you are considering this workshop, GO FOR IT! It was an exciting two days! I once took an all-female skiing lesson. The slogan was “Nobody yells”. This workshop had that same feeling. A few of the things I learned is that shooting in manual is not complicated, how to compose the photo’s story with the rule of thirds, and how to take advantage of light and shadows.

I want to thank you for the wonderful weekend and the Confidence Workshop!
The Confidence Workshop was just what I hoped it would be.
Full of information, time for questions, participation, hands-on photography opportunities.
I liked the location and the hotel.
The food was healthy and great.
Personal touches like the little bags you prepared for us were really thoughtful and helpful. I especially loved the two pre-printed notebooks that helped us document the information. I think I do have a hearing deficit too – if I don’t write the information down it seems to disappear. I love going back over notes and remembering all the information when I need it.
I thought you did a great job of team teaching and keeping things interesting and lighthearted.
